ESL for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program

The Kendall Campus ESL/Foreign Languages Department offers a comprehensive series of English as a Second Language courses. If you know only a little English, you can start at Level 1; other students can enter the program at higher levels depending on their Michigan Test Score. The department's six levels include courses that improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. The full-time program consists of six levels of the following skill areas:

Speech and Listening (3 credits)
Reading (3 credits)
Writing (3 credits)
Grammar (3 credits)
Speech Lab (1 credit)
Writing Lab (3 credits)

  • Fall  Semesters (late August to mid-December) & Spring Semester (early January to late April) are normally 16 weeks long. 
  • EAP students can take a maximum of 6 classes (five 3-credit classes & one 1-credit class).

Summer A, B, and C:

Summer A (early May to mid-June) is 6 weeks long. Students can take a maximum of 2 classes (two 3-credit classes).

Summer B (mid-June to late July) is normally 6 weeks long. Students can take a maximum of 2 classes (two 3-credit classes).

Summer C is 12 weeks long (from early May to late July).  Students can take 4 classes (3-credit classes).

Intensive Program

The Kendall Campus ESL/Foreign Languages Department offers an intensive English as a Second Language program for advanced students during fall and spring semesters. This program covers Levels 3 & 4 and also Levels 5 & 6 in 16 weeks. This option is recommended only for students who have a 3.0 grade point average or higher. BECAUSE OF THE TIME REQUIREMENTS (45 HOURS WEEKLY), IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT PARTICIPANTS DO NOT WORK PART-TIME WHILE STUDYING IN THE INTENSIVE PROGRAM.

All F-1 visa students must enroll full-time; resident students may attend part-time.
