Using the Passive Voice

Lecture 3

There are a few more things to remember when creating the passive voice. Using the right form of the verb when you create the passive is really important. You also need to be careful of word order, agreement and time/tense. Here is a chart of the passive and active verb tenses.

Tense Active Passive
Present Simple They do it in Spain. It is done in Spain.
Present Continuous (Progressive) They are doing it in Spain. It is being done in Spain.
Past Simple They did it in Spain. It was done in Spain
Past Continuous They were doing it in Spain. It was being done in Spain.
Present Perfect They have done it in Spain. It has been done in Spain.
Future with Going to They are going to do it in Spain. It is going to be done in Spain
Simple Future They will do it in Spain. It will be done in Spain.

The same basic rules for word order apply with the passive voice:

- Negative words go after the verb "be" in your sentences with simple tenses
- Negative words go after the verb "have" and before "been" with perfect tenses
