Lecture 3: Punctuation and sentence structure

You should pay close attention to punctuation and sentence structure when you use signal words, or transitions in your sentences. Here are some examples of different punctuation and sentence structures you can use in your detail sentences.

Example 1:     IC, for example, list.

Katherine Hepburn influenced a generation of current screen actresses, for example, Meryl Streep, Kathleen Turner and Cameron Diaz.

In this example, “for example” (or “for instance”) is followed by a list…not an independent clause (IC*), so only a comma is necessary.

(* "IC"= "Independent Clause")

Example 2A:    IC; for example, IC.
Katherine Hepburn influenced a generation of current screen actresses; for example, Meryl Streep, Kathleen Turner and Cameron Diaz have indicated that they studied her techniques in acting school.

Example 2B:   IC. For example, IC.
Katherine Hepburn influenced a generation of current screen actresses. For instance, Meryl Streep, Kathleen Turner and Cameron Diaz have indicated that they studied her techniques in acting school.

In these examples, “for example” and “for instance” are followed by an independent clause (IC), so there must be either a semi-colon or a period before the signal marker.

Example 3:    IC, such as...

Katherine Hepburn influenced a generation of current screen actresses, such as Meryl Streep, Kathleen Turner and Cameron Diaz.

NOTE: The signal marker “such as” can only be used with lists.
