Lecture 3 Answering the Information Question Words When and Where Correctly

  • Do you remember what WH- question words are for
     

  • We use WH- question words when we are looking for information. 
     

  • Each WH- word asks for a different type of information.
     

Here is the table from Lecture 1 that shows us what each WH- word is for.

  • Remember, each question word looks for certain information. 
     

  • Each answer must give that information. 
     

  • In this lecture we are looking at when and where
     


When

  • When asks about time
     

  • The answer for a when question must be a time.

Examples

Question:  When Answer = Time Explanation
When do we leave? We leave at 7:00. WHEN = Time = 7:00
When does Anne go to school? Anne goes to school on Mondays. WHEN = Time = Mondays

 

Where

  • Where asks about location (a place).

  • The answer for a where question must be a location.

Examples

Question:  Where Answer = Location Explanation
Where does Jorge live? Jorge lives in Miami. WHERE = Location = in Miami
Where do you want to visit? I want to visit Hawaii. WHERE = Location = Hawaii

 

Short Answers

We can make short answers for these questions.  Short answers only include the information that the question word asked about.  We can also include the preposition that comes before the answer.  This is shown in parentheses ( ).

Examples
