L105: The Verb DO
Lecture 3:
DO as a Verb Auxiliary in Yes/No Questions
How can the verb
do help make
questions?
Examples:
I
like school.
The teacher
gives
homework.
Examples:
Do
you
like school?
Does
the teacher
give homework?
So, the verb
do
helps make a YES/NO question by changing place with the subject.
More examples:
My students
read.
] Do
my students read?
Maria
works.
] Does
Maria work?
Use
do
to give short answers to YES/NO questions.
Put the
subject first, then the correct
form of do.
(Remember, 3rd person singular (he/she/it) takes the
form does.
All other subjects take the form do.)
