L105: The Verb DO

Lecture 3:  DO as a Verb Auxiliary in Yes/No Questions

How can the verb do help make questions?

  • To make a sentence, start with the subject, then follow with the verb

Examples:

I like school.
The teacher gives homework.

  • To ask a question, start with do or does, follow with the subject, then the main verb:

Examples:

Do you like school?
Does the teacher give homework?

So, the verb do helps make a YES/NO question by changing place with the subject.
